A guide for taking your first nautical steps safely, part 1: anchoring.⚓

Dear nautical enthusiasts and fans, greetings!👋

As we aim to spread the spirit of yachting among people and, at the same time, possess a wealth of knowledge from our experienced team in this field, we have decided to prepare a series of nautical tips to help beginners take their first steps into the wonderful blue world of sailors.🌊

Before a sailor begins to operate a vessel, they must learn how to safely bring it to a stop and keep it in place. Confidence is essential in this endeavor, as there is no room for doubt and mistakes in rough seas, and the responsibility for one’s own and others’ lives is significant. Therefore, we have chosen our first piece of advice to be about anchoring. Read about the key points you need to know to properly anchor your boat.

1️⃣    Anchor selection: check if your anchor has the appropriate weight and shape for your boat and also for the anchoring area. A general rule is that the anchor should weigh one kilogram per every four meters of the boat’s length.

2️⃣  Understanding the seabed: before you drop the anchor, examine the seabed. Different types of seabeds require different types of anchors for optimal grip.

3️⃣  Proper rope length: use a rope that is long enough to keep the boat sufficiently away from the seabed and prevent uncomfortable swaying in the sea’s waves.

4️⃣  Lifting the anchor: when lifting the anchor, ensure that the rope does not wrap around the anchor itself. This could cause unnecessary tension and difficulties during lifting.

5️⃣    Checking the anchor positioning: once the anchor is dropped, make sure it is securely positioned and the boat is properly anchored. Pull back a few times to ensure the anchor has “caught” well.

6️⃣    Monitoring the weather: check the weather forecast and verify if the anchor is strong enough to withstand potential changes in conditions.

7️⃣    Maintenance: regularly inspect and maintain the anchor in optimal condition.

Properly used, an anchor will ensure that you can enjoy a peaceful time at sea and avoid unpleasant situations. We look forward to your safe journeys at sea and wish you a pleasant voyage!
